He said "22, I believe". That would be a 22 pistol close range head shot, not a lot of noise.

I don't understand certain ballistic fundamentals in police work. Is it the bullet or the spent shell casing that leaves the identifying mark? In other words, how can a deformed spent bullet be examined for any sort of barrel markings?

Both.
The shape of the "deformed" bullet is not examined, the markings on it are.

The base of the bullet tends to be less deformed than the mushroomed tip. This is where the markings should be most well preserved.

I've heard so many anecdotal stories about the .22 as the choice of hitmen, I still have a hard time believing it.

22's sound like a cap gun going off. Nobody gets alarmed if they here it.

Pluss when they enter they tumble around if it is a head shot it will turn your brain into sillt putty.

That is a nice assaination piece.

That depends on the piece (ie: Berreta .22 vs Ruger Mark I, II, III .22's vs Browning Buck Mark .22 vs The North American Arms family of mini .22's vs Davis Derringer .22's add infinitum.

Some are louder than others.

Maranatha,
